{"id":1496,"date":"2020-04-30T03:33:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T03:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/?p=1496"},"modified":"2025-04-27T21:15:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-27T21:15:23","slug":"fisheries-offer-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/2020\/04\/30\/fisheries-offer-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"Fisheries Offer Sea of Opportunities in New Jobs Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/consumer_our-people_tile_689x452.jpg\" alt=\"Sealord NZ employee wearing yellow overalls, gloves, and a safety helmet, smiling while holding a container of fish inside a seafood processing factory.\" class=\"wp-image-1499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/consumer_our-people_tile_689x452.jpg 800w, https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/consumer_our-people_tile_689x452-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/consumer_our-people_tile_689x452-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hihotest2.co.nz\/sealord\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/consumer_our-people_tile_689x452-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Credit: Stuff NZ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Filling hundreds of seafood jobs in the top of the south is the aim of a new campaign driven by a regional development body and employers.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) programme,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catchajob.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catch a Job<\/a>, is an extension of its successful&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/business\/124196697\/big-response-to-project-kkiris-pick-nelsontasman-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit-picking programme Pick Nelson Tasman<\/a>&nbsp;which filled vacancies during harvest season.<\/p>\n\n<p>The agency has now partnered with three major fishing firms, Sealord, Sanford and Talley\u2019s, to fill hundreds of vacancies in the industry.<\/p>\n\n<p>The two campaigns are both a part of the region\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/nelson-mail\/122571900\/development-agency-gears-up-for-long-economic-recovery-from-covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Covid-19 recovery programme Project K\u014dkiri<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><p>NRDA regional development and attraction manager Hannah Norton said the move from fruit-picking to fisheries was \u201ca natural extension\u201d of the NRDA\u2019s work in the region.<\/p><p>\u201cWe have the largest fishing port in Australasia, and over 70 per cent of New Zealand\u2019s aquaculture is located here in Te Tauihu,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>\u201cThe seafood sector is a critical economic driver for our region. With our borders remaining closed, there\u2019s a shortage of workers for both seasonal and permanent work &#8230; it was a natural extension to partner with the seafood sector to support their recruitment drive on behalf of the region.\u201d<\/p><p>There were hundreds of positions to be filled, from entry-level to career opportunities, Norton said, and the primary sector \u201chas secure employment pathways for people seeking job security\u201d.<\/p><p>\u201cWe know that many people in our community and further afield have been displaced from work due to Covid-19, and so we\u2019re putting the call out to say there are boatloads of opportunities on offer here in Te Tauihu.\u201d<\/p><p>Sealord\u2019s general manager of human resources Dawn Cooper said Sealord was in \u201curgent need\u201d of up to 400 more workers for the hoki season, which runs from May to September.<\/p><p>She said the season was usually \u201c80 per cent filled\u201d by people on working holiday visas, but with Covid-19 travel restrictions there was a void to fill.<\/p><p>\u201cWe recently introduced a new school hours shift for our fresh fish line to appeal to parents, and there\u2019s been some good interest from potential new recruits,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful this targeted online recruitment campaign will help bolster those efforts.\u201d<\/p><p>Talley\u2019s HR manager Nathan Howes said the project was a collaborative one that helped not just the companies involved but the wider community.<\/p><p>\u201cWe \u2013 Talley\u2019s, Sealord, Sanford \u2013 have come together to help each other out, as we are all impacted by the current worker shortage,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>\u201cWe also know how much our businesses impact on the community in terms of incomes earned here being spent here, so we really want to help our local economy by filling our workplaces with staff. Also, the demand for our products is there, we just need people who are keen to work.\u201d<\/p><p>Talley\u2019s in particular was looking for people interested in entry level mussel and hoki processing jobs in Motueka, and mussel processing in Blenheim.
